i love a nice theme party and reading about the doughnuts at the nickel diner gave me a great idea – a make your own doughnut (toppings) party! it sounds like it would be best in the fall/winter, as most of the toppings will probably be sticky icky in the summertime. can’t wait! start thinking of good toppings!

fresh air recently replayed an interview from 1987 with jazz singer anita o’day. i went through a big jazz singer phase a few years ago and really liked anita’s music but never knew much about her. she’s pretty interesting and super hilarious in an “old broad” kind of way (she called terry “kid” a lot). i’m excited to see the documentary about her and read her autobiography.

i love my saltwaters! i got the navy ones worn in the photo. one note – they are supposed to be snug when you put them on to allow for stretching, which i didn’t know. so if you are ordering them online somewhere, think about sizing down.

in my annual summer obsession with 1991-era deadhead style (i call it the kyle ripka after a boy from high school who really mastered the look), i found this great set of photos on flickr that included some pictures of one of the last shows they played at soldier field. later in the day I looked for a youtube of samson & delilah just to listen and BOOM!

the first video that popped up is from the same show that the dude’s photos are from (i think). that’s probably not all that WHOA-worthy, but I whoa-d anyway.

i love chile limon snacks and really love chile limon cheetos. they aren't cheesy - just chile limon-y. i've only ever had/seen them in california so imagine my freakout when i saw them at the port richmond wawa. one of my favorite places in san diego is the tide pools at cabrillo national park. so beautiful and fun. visiting always entails poking a million sea anemone with bits of sea weed, and this song inevitably runs through my head on repeat. the song itself is just awful and reminds me of sad boyfriends and long mixtapes, but is still somehow so good.

i finally attended a flyers game in which they won! i’ve been a ton of games over the years and they have always lost when i was there. even if they are on a red-hot winning streak – i show up and they lose. until now! they won! maybe somehow i am related to the billy penn curse and now that that is broken, i’m not bad luck anymore. this american life had another frightening show about the economy last week explaining what the heck is going on, similar to the giant pool of money episode. both are interesting (and scary) and helped me understand why my bank failed and all the rest of it.

and for some sunnier times, check out the show a little bit of knowledge. the prologue and act 1 are so good that i've retold them as if these people are my friends and i've heard these accounts straight from them. and i've caught other people doing the same!
